Purvis Young (African American, 1943–2010) was a self-taught artist from Miami’s historic Overtown neighborhood, whose work blends expressionism, folk traditions, and street culture. Drawing from his African American heritage and the realities of urban life, Young used found materials and energetic brushwork to explore themes of struggle, freedom, and spiritual resilience. His raw, vibrant visual language has made him one of the most celebrated outsider and narrative artists of his generation.
