Édouard Joseph Goerg (1893–1969) was born in Sydney, Australia, and educated in France, where he became known for his evocative paintings and engravings exploring human character and modern life.
Associated with the École de Paris, Goerg’s work blends expressionist intensity and poetic realism, earning him exhibitions at the Salon des Indépendants and recognition by the French Academy of Fine Arts, which appointed him professor in 1959.
